Sense-City, from the smart city to the sustainable city

The Sense-City project is a true sustainable city laboratory, aligned with the objectives of the Energy Transition Plan launched in 2014. Funded as part of the Future Investments Plan, Sense-City explores the concept of the “sensitive” city in realistic conditions, a city that can constantly assess itself in order to become more energy-efficient, environmentally cleaner and safer from a health perspective.

The concept involves rolling out massive networks of physical, chemical, optical, mechanical and biological micro or nano-sensors in a city, to understand and optimise its functioning in close connection with residents. The challenges include developing high-tech sensors designed to work for long periods in a fluctuating, aggressive environment, as well as designing digital methods and algorithms capable of effectively exploiting the enormous quantity of information generated by these sensors, in order to improve the functioning of urban ecosystems in real-time.

Sense-City allows realistic demonstrations of urban innovations in a mobile climate chamber that can cover two mini cities of 400 m² each. The equipment makes it possible to programme specific weather conditions for given periods of time.
